Psalm 59.
Do not be sad,
when, perhaps going home of an evening,
yes, of an autumn evening,
with the clouds sitting ready for glory
and the light catching the gold of the leaves,
and you are taken with the life all around,
with the bustle and the animation,
feeling a warmth for the warm,
for your fellows, for the living.
On such an evening, alive and glad,
do not be sad.
Do not be sad,
however poetical such sadness,
to think that you, like the leaves,
will all too soon be no more,
that there will come such evenings
when all will stir as now, but without you.
To be sad there is no need,
for you will never leave the creation.
It will never unfold without you,
never not include your joy in it.
What is so fondly looked upon,
what is so rightly cherished,
is the life that powers everything,
the sense of self in all.
All the living feel just as you,
sense the same one self.
All minds marvel by the one light,
all bodies feel by the one life.
The one you take yourself to be,
this your fellows all think themselves.
Do not be sad;
your presence is essential.
The world is made of you,
teems with your many variations.
You are as numerous as the stars,
as the stars that shine with your light.
Do not be sad.
Above all do not you be sad,
O life, O light, O light of the world,
but ever glad, glad, glad.
