Girl With Dog: A Whimsy.
I love you, love only you! Do you hear?
Always have and always will! O my dear!
She passes, to my ardent outburst deaf,
proclaimed, as it was, well beneath the breath.
He eyed me though, as if he knew my game,
pricked up his ears and strained upon his chain.
They go, a faithful couple wending home,
and here I left to skulk along alone.
That I might thus upon her leash be led,
to stretch out each night by her virgin bed!
What worth all human heritage to me?
Happier her dog than the stray I be!
