The Pain.

You had, we reflect, a sad life,

being sad for all the sadness in the world,

ever vocal about the woes of others,

in the parish, among the neighbours, on the news,

and burdened too, let us not forget,

with your own many afflictions,

 so bravely and discreetly borne,

but somehow all too manifest.

No. Never contrary, just often rightly vexed,

never complaining, just plainly ailing.

They were, we must accept, a trial,

your long years in this valley of tears.

 And now, yes, we confess,

things are rather jollier since you left.
